The Quiet Table

This is a place for slow meals, soft stories, and recipes that remember. At The Quiet Table, I share food that’s not just made — it’s felt. Dishes passed down, moments preserved in butter and spice, quiet rituals that feed more than just hunger. Pull up a chair, pour yourself something warm, and stay awhile.

“For some , there is therapy. For the rest of us, there’s chocolate (or candy).”

I read this quote somewhere and I find it true. Chocolate (or candy) can really make one happy. Or at least it can help lift one’s spirits. And because it’s Halloween today, it is just right to post about it.

As if it’s destiny, I saw my mom, grandma and aunt’s favorite candy in the grocery today. I can’t help but get a bag even if my husband and kids don’t particularly love it because it’s not just candy to me. It is memories and moments and milestones. It is a lullaby in a tiny gold-foil-wrapped package. It is the care, the benevolent presence and the serenity of the three women who raised me. Enjoying it definitely takes me back to those moments when they were still here. Totally bittersweet but always worth it.

Today is also the last day of October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month. My mom and my aunt and two of my older sisters went through metastatic breast cancer. It is one thing that changed our lives forever and I will always remember October this way.

As the whole world celebrates Halloween and enjoys all the treats and candy tonight, I will be basking in the endorphins I’d get from this bag of candy woven with warmth.
